
Don’t Overpay for Your Convection Oven Lamps
Let’s be honest: buying original manufacturer (OEM) lamps for imported ovens is a racket. You’re basically paying a “brand tax” for a piece of glass and a filament. You can absolutely find replacements that work just as well without that markup. But there’s a catch. If you ignore the technical bits, you’ll end up blowing your new tubes in a week. Watch your voltage. This is where most people trip up. If your oven wants 230V and you throw in a 220V tube, it’s going to run way too hot. It’ll look super bright for a second, and then—pop. The same goes for wattage. You want a match. If the wattage is off, your food is either going to sit there forever or get scorched on the outside while staying cold in the middle. No one wants that. Quartz vs. Everything Else Most of these lamps use quartz. Why? Because it doesn’t crack when the temperature jumps around. If you’re reheating stuff all day, look for halogen-filled tubes. They have this neat little cycle that puts the tungsten back onto the filament, which keeps the bulb alive much longer. Be careful with the “budget” options. Some are just basic infrared bulbs pretending to be halogen. They’ll dim quickly and burn out way faster when you’re actually putting them to work. The Fit Matters Check your connectors. Whether you have an R7s or some weird slide-in style, it has to be a snug fit. If it’s loose, you get “arc points.” Those are basically tiny lightning bolts that melt your socket and kill the lamp. Not a great look. One last thing: high-output lamps put out a ton of heat. It’s tempting to go for the highest wattage to save a few bucks or speed things up, but that puts a lot of stress on your wiring and vents. Just make sure your oven’s guts can actually handle the power draw before you flip the switch.
