
Why Your Bathroom Heater Shouldn’t Blind You (Especially the Kids)
When you’re getting a baby ready for a bath, the last thing you want is a heater that feels like a stadium floodlight. You need the room to get warm—fast—but you don’t want that harsh, blinding glare hitting someone’s eyes. It’s a tricky balance. You want the heat, but not the “staring into the sun” feeling.
Fixing the Glare
Most basic infrared lamps are just too bright. They put out a sharp, aggressive light that can actually strain your eyes. To stop that, we use special quartz coatings or filtered glass. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. The filter blocks out the UV rays and that piercing white light, but lets the warmth slide right through. You end up with a soft, cozy glow instead of a blinding flash. It’s much gentler on the eyes, which is a huge deal when you’re dealing with sensitive retinas.
The Tech Under the Hood
We usually go with halogen-filled quartz tubes. The reason is simple: halogen lets the filament get really hot without burning itself out. This keeps the whole unit small and efficient. By tweaking the gas pressure and the thickness of the filament, we can change how the light looks. We aim for a lower color temperature, which is just a fancy way of saying we make the light feel warmer and less “electric.”
The Trade-off
Here’s the catch. When you put a filter on a lamp to protect your eyes, some of that energy gets bounced back or absorbed. Because of that, you might need a bit more wattage to get the same level of warmth you’d feel from an unfiltered lamp. It’s a small price to pay for safety, but it does mean you have to be smart about your power. A quick tip on the wiring: Make sure these are on their own dedicated circuit. These heaters pull a lot of juice the second you flip the switch. If your wiring is flimsy or you’re sharing the circuit with too many other things, you’re probably going to trip a breaker. Just give it its own line and you’re good to go.
